GALVESTON ISLAND, TEXAS (12 February 2017) Following his sold-out Grand debut in 2015, Arlo Guthrie makes his triumphant return to The Grand 1894 Opera House, with the Shenandoah Band, on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at 8 pm. Tickets may be purchased at The Grand’s Box Office, 2020 Postoffice Street, by calling 409.765.1894, 800.821.1894, or online at www.thegrand.com.

Known to generations as a prolific songwriter, social commentator, master storyteller, actor, and activist, Arlo – son of legendary American folk musician Woody Guthrie– grew up surrounded by such renowned artists as Pete Seeger, Sonny Terry, and Ramblin’ Jack Elliott.  Arlo and Pete Seeger created a legendary collaboration that was sustained for over forty years. With his 1967 Newport Folk Festival hit, “The Alice’s Restaurant Massacre.” Arlo Guthrie became a member of American folk music royalty. In 1983, Arlo left the major record label system to fulfill his career as a truly independent artist. He established Rising Son Records, one of the first indie labels in existence. Rising Son is still in active operation serving as his record and production company. To date Rising Son Records has released over twenty titles of Arlo’s, both all new material and re-mastered versions of his classic records

Inspired by his parents’ activism, Arlo bought the old Trinity Church (“the” church) that is now home to The Guthrie Center and The Guthrie Foundation. Named for his parents, The Guthrie Center is a not-for-profit interfaith church foundation dedicated to providing a wide range of local and international services. The Guthrie Foundation is a separate not-for-profit educational organization that addresses issues such as the environment, health care, cultural preservation and educational exchange. In 2009 Arlo was awarded the ASCAP Foundation Champion Award for making a difference through social action on behalf of worthwhile causes and demonstrating exceptional efforts in humanitarianism.

Guthrie’s “Running Down The Road” tour reunites Arlo with various musicians who performed with him  in the band Shenandoah (1975-87) and who have contributed to Guthrie’s studio albums, tours, and the Arlo and Jackie Guthrie Family Archives.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, The Grand 1894 Opera House is located at 2020 PostOffice Street in historic downtown Galveston's Cultural Arts District and is recognized as “The Official Opera House of the State of Texas.” All major credit cards accepted.
