THE GRAND’S LEGENDARY 125th ANNIVERSARY SEASON CONTINUES WITH JEKYLL & HYDE – SILENT FILM WITH ROB LANDES, OCTOBER 25

GALVESTON ISLAND, TEXAS (30 June 2019.)  To commemorate Halloween, The Grand 1894 Opera House’s 125th Legendary Anniversary Season showcases JEKYLL & HYDE – Silent Film with ROB LANDES on the Organ, Friday, October 25 at 8pm. Tickets may be purchased at The Grand’s Box Office, 2020 Postoffice Street, by calling 409.765.1894, 800.821.1894, or online at www.thegrand.com.

A Galveston favorite and keyboard marvel, Rob Landes will perform his specially-created, improvised musical score to accompany the showing of John Barrymore’s 1920 silent film classic – Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde.  At his zenith in the 1920s, Barrymore was acclaimed as the greatest Shakespearian actor of his generation. Playing the dual roles of  Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Barrymore was hailed by critics who praised his portrayal as “a thing of fine shadows and violent emotions.” The earliest “sound” accompaniment to silent films was provided by a lone piano soloist, who improvised or performed compilations of classical or theatrical musical repertoire. However, prior to the addition of orchestral musicians, it was the massive theatre organ that expanded the emotional content of the silent film - thrilling audiences with a wide range of simulated orchestral sounds and special effects ranging from galloping horses to rolling thunder. You won’t want to miss this Grand masterpiece of sight and sound! This performance is sponsored in part by Galveston Limousine Service.
